The Story

Since its founding in 1991, New Mexico Mutual Group (NMMG) has become the largest provider of workers’ compensation insurance in the state, insuring close to 30% of the insured company market in New Mexico.

NMMG insures all types of business, with special attention to small and medium-sized businesses, working with more than 300 agents across New Mexico. The company’s mission is to provide access to quality, cost-effective workers’ compensation insurance as well as the best possible care and services to injured workers. To meet that goal today and in the future, NMMG started a unique innovation project.

That project would replace two core systems that relied on a DOS environment: claims and billing. To streamline its ability to uphold its mission, NMMG knew that claims would be the first of the core system replacement projects to undertake. After replacing its legacy claims system with Guidewire ClaimCenter two months ahead of schedule, the insurer was able to:

  • Offer adjusters more productivity tools and an easier application to use
  • Capture more claims data so that adjusters can handle larger claims volumes
  • Provide management with a real-time view of inventory
  • Enable adjusters and in-house medical bill reviewers to work in the same system, so that a staff of six is now able to handle 1,500‒2,000 medical bills per week
ClaimCenter has received universal acceptance by our adjusters,” said Mike Zambrano NMMG Communications Specialist (and former claims adjuster). “Our employees were involved in the project each step of the way; they were our testers and provided invaluable input as we configured ClaimCenter to our needs.”

Next, NMMG replaced its legacy billing system with Guidewire BillingCenter. BillingCenter provides New Mexico Mutual with real-time billing and payment data at the individual policy and account levels, as well as the ability to better manage agent commissions and proactively manage its collection agency interactions. These improvements make it easy for the company’s billing representatives to quickly get accurate details to better serve their customers.

“BillingCenter will also grow with us, helping us meet future strategic and compliance objectives,” said Lynn Krueger, Billing and Collection Manager at NMMG.

NMMG remains on an innovation path, leveraging Guidewire’s digital platform and integration with other systems to create further efficiencies.
