Business Benefits
- Built a rate adjustment model using decision trees, which helps segment risks by their impact on the loss ratio
- Expects to shrink segments hurting the loss ratio and expand segments with good risk
The Story
The Apollo Group services the nonstandard personal auto insurance market to fill a need for those customers who have a difficult time finding automobile insurance coverage. Their goal is to identify and segment the marketplace in order to accurately price risks for maximum profitability.
Analytics is a huge part of Apollo’s business. The MGA dives deep into its data on a daily basis. In order to stay ahead of the curve, Apollo wanted to make sure it had the right tools to slice-n-dice the data to find real indicators of profits and profitable pockets of risks. That is why Apollo turned to Guidewire Predict.
“Guidewire really goes deep into the data,” noted Greg Corbitt, VP of Product Management. “Predict is not just a surface oriented analytical software tool. It really gets into places we can’t get to.”
With Predict, Apollo built a rate adjustment model using decision trees that helps segment risks by their impact on the loss ratio. Apollo went live with Predict in early February 2023. Implementation was on time and under budget.
Apollo is already seeing leading indicators for their new business segmentation. It expects to continue seeing benefits from the model, including shrinking the segments that are hurting the loss ratio the most and expanding the segments with good risks. This will result in improving the underwriting profitability. As Apollo learns more about Predict, it plans to expand usage with claims modeling.
